On Tuesday, March 28th, US Vice President Kamala Harris will be listed among the great ones to visit the historic town of Cape Coast. Vice President Kamala Harris will tour the Cape Coast slave castle where she will speak about the brutality of slavery and the African Diaspora as part of her working visit to Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia.
The good people of Cape Coast should prepare for movement restrictions, telecommunications disruptions, and other heightened security measures. Avoid any protests that occur as a standard precaution. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
Cape Coast is the capital of the Central Region, in southern Ghana. It’s known for its role in the transatlantic slave trade. Overlooking the Gulf of Guinea, Cape Coast Castle is a large whitewashed fort built by the Swedish in the 17th century. It was later used by the British as a holding prison for slaves. Inside, the Castle Museum has exhibits on pre-colonial local history, the slave trade and traditional crafts.
