UCC honours Oguaamanhen Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II
The honorary award is in recognition of his distinguished service to the university, Central Region, Ghana and the global community, particularly his commitment to promoting peace, unity and development.
The University of Cape Coast has conferred an honorary degree of law on the paramount chief of Oguaa Traditional area, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II. The honorary award is in recognition of his distinguished service to the university, Central Region, Ghana and the global community, particularly his commitment to promoting peace, unity and development.
The chancellor of the university, Dr. Sir Sam Esson Jonah in his address commended the omanhen for his outstanding leadership in ensuring the University lived in harmony with the surrounding communities over the years. “Osabarima’s love for Cape Coast, his contributions to the university, his role in promoting regional unity and peace, and his advocacy for local development make him an exemplary honoree. Indeed, this honour is long overdue,” he stated.
The vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong reiterated the school’s continuous commitment in recognising and rewarding individuals who contribute to the advancement of society. He further noted that traditional rulers play an important role in the lives of many Africans. “In many countries, traditional rulers play a prominent role as mediators of violent conflict and champion community development and transformation,” he added.
In his acceptance speech, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II expressed his gratitude to the management of the university for the recognition. “What is happening today is an act of God and I give God all the honour,” he said. Osabarima further promised to continue to ensure the school lives in harmony with its neighbouring communities.
“I want to assure you that I will spend all the time available to make sure whatever it is that is bothering the smooth academic teaching and peaceful existence of this institution”, he stated. The omanhen who is an accountant by profession, further pledged to reward the best graduating accounting student each year with a sum of GHC 2,000.
